Visit Our Loom & Craft Story

Artisan weaving an Oushakaura rug by hand at the loom

Every Oushakaura rug begins at the loom, not in a factory line. This is where skilled hands, natural wool, and time-honored techniques come together to create rugs meant to last for generations. Each rug carries within it the rhythm of the loom, the patience of the weaver, and the quiet pride of a family that has devoted itself to this craft for over 25 years.

The Loom: Where Every Rug Begins

Step into our workshop in India, and you'll hear it before you see it: the steady, meditative clack of the loom at work. Our weavers sit at hand-operated looms that have been part of our family's tradition for generations. Whether hand-knotting a dense, intricate pile or hand-tufting a plush, textured surface, every movement is deliberate and precise.

Hand-knotting is one of the oldest and most demanding rug-making techniques in the world. Each knot is tied individually by hand, row by row, across the loom. A single square foot of a hand-knotted rug can contain hundreds of knots, and a full rug can take weeks or even months to complete. This is not mass production. This is devotion.

Our hand-tufted rugs are crafted with equal care, using a hand-operated tufting tool to loop wool through a backing canvas, creating rich textures and patterns that are then finished and secured by hand. Every piece is inspected, trimmed, and refined before it ever leaves our workshop.

A Family Legacy, 25+ Years in the Making

Weavers at work in the Oushakaura workshop — a tradition spanning generations

Oushakaura is a second-generation rug manufacturing family. Our founders began this journey over two and a half decades ago with a simple but powerful belief: that a rug made with honest materials and honest hands would always outlast anything made by a machine.

That belief has guided everything we do. From the very first rug our family produced to the thousands that have since found homes around the world, the commitment has never wavered. We learned this craft from those who came before us, and we continue to pass it forward to the artisans who work alongside us and to the next generation of our family who are already learning the loom.

Our workshop is not just a place of production. It is a living archive of technique, memory, and craft. The patterns we weave today echo designs that have been refined over decades. The skills our artisans bring to work each day have been honed over lifetimes. Read our full story →

Natural Materials, Honestly Sourced

Naturally dyed wool skeins in earthy tones ready for weaving

We believe a great rug starts with great materials. That is why every Oushakaura rug is made from 100% natural wool — soft, durable, and sustainably sourced. Wool is a remarkable material: it is naturally resilient, resistant to dirt and stains, and only grows more beautiful with age and use.

Our colors come from vegetable-based dyes, chosen for their depth, richness, and longevity. Unlike synthetic dyes, vegetable dyes develop a gentle patina over time; the colors soften and deepen in a way that makes each rug feel more alive the longer it is lived with. There are no harsh chemicals in our process and no shortcuts in our palette.

Everything—the wool, the dyes, the weaving, the finishing—happens in-house, right here in India. We control every step of the process because we care about every step of the process. Explore our natural wool rugs →

Made in India, With Pride

India has one of the oldest and richest rug-making traditions in the world, and we are honored to be part of it. Our workshop is rooted in this heritage, drawing on centuries of craft knowledge while bringing our own family's vision and standards to every piece we create.

When you bring an Oushakaura rug into your home, you are not just buying a floor covering. You are welcoming in the work of real hands, real skill, and a real family story. You are choosing something made to last — not just for years, but for generations.

We invite you to look closely at your rug. Run your hand across the pile. Notice the slight variations in texture and color that no machine could replicate. That is the loom. That is the weaver. That is us.
